The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institutes of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) [https://www.nichd.nih.gov/Pages/index.aspx] at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announces two exciting opportunities within the Contraception Research Branch (CRB) and the Gynecologic Health and Disease Branch (GHDB) to serve as a Medical Officer. These are full-time positions based in the Bethesda, MD area.
The CRB is focused on (1) understanding the impact of contraceptive use on health, (2) developing novel methods of contraception for men and women, and (3) understanding the behavioral basis of contraceptive use and nonuse. The incumbent for this position will:
- Serve as a Medical Officer in support of a major extramural research program area of national scope, involving epidemiologic studies, clinical trials, and other basic and clinical studies.
- Plan, implement, coordinate, and evaluate programs and initiatives in the assigned specialty area of research.
- Formulate internal policies concerning extramural research policy and priorities, and advise management on the direction of research efforts.
- Be responsible for timely administrative actions on grant applications and funded projects, and for developing effective solutions to emerging or unforeseen challenges affecting program development or administration.
- Develop strategies to overcome unforeseen difficulties by identifying and implementing innovative solutions to ensure progress toward goals and integrate and coordinate the efforts of others in the organization, giving technical leadership to extramural research efforts in the design and conduct of research.

The GHDB supports basic, translational and clinical research programs related to gynecologic health throughout the reproductive lifespan. The Branch portfolio includes studies on menstrual disorders, uterine fibroids, endometriosis, ovarian cyst, and pelvic floor disorders. The incumbent for this position will:
- Serve as Medical Officer for a portfolio of extramural research grants in the assigned specialty areas within gynecology, including basic, translational, and clinical studies.
- Serve as Project Scientist for the Pelvic Floor Disorders Network. The Project Scientist is a critical liaison between the NICHD, clinical research sites, and the data coordinating center in the development of research protocols, data analysis and interpretation, ongoing evaluation of objectives, and participation in the dissemination of research results.
- Establish goals and objectives within their specific gynecologic area and contribute to the development of branch-wide research and training initiatives.
- Critically evaluate grants and programs in the assigned specialty area of research and advise NICHD leadership on the importance and timeliness of the study questions.
The successful candidates for each position will have the following Qualifications and Experiences:
- Degree: Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy from a school in the United States or Canada approved by a recognized accrediting body in the year of the applicant's graduation.
- Board Certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
- 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector. Examples of qualifying experience includes planning and coordinating biomedical research programs and activities, including administrative, regulatory and scientific matters.
