About the Department: The mission of the Vanderbilt Department of Biomedical informatics has complementary themes that include education, research, service, and a commitment to our colleagues in our own institution and around the world. Educational Mission is t o educate undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate trainees in the theory and practice of biomedical informatics. Research and Service Missions is t o develop and evaluate innovative technologies for the storage, retrieval, dissemination, and application of biomedical knowledge, in order to support clinical practice, biomedical research, life-long learning, and administration and as a result, to contribute to the professional body of knowledge in the field of biomedical informatics. Professional and Ethical Mission is t o maintain cooperation and collegiality with all those who learn and work with us locally, nationally, and internationally; and, to develop and disseminate ethical and professional standards for the conduct of biomedical informatics research and for the use and evaluation of health care informatics applications.
Assists the Principal Investigator with grant and manuscript preparation. Independently carry out and design highly sophisticated and independent experiments. Mentor and train graduate students and post doctoral fellow in developing their research projects. Ideal candidate would have strengths in computer programming or data science with a degree in statistical genetics, biomedical informatics, epidemiology, or a related field to work on electronic health record-based genetic studies in an academic research setting. The job entails working with some of the largest biomedical data sets ever put together. Responsibilities include phenotype development and validation using de-identified medical records, with the ultimate goal of understanding how genetic variation impacts human health and disease. Required skills include programming (largely in scripting languages), working with linux- and cloud-based environments, and an understanding of epidemiological and statistical methods in large data sets. A biological background or experience in genetic research is preferred. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required to assist with manuscript development . Experience with working with large data sets using python, R, and/or perl is preferred. Tools and analyses developed through our team have the potential to change treatments and improve lives. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Independently oversee research projects and perform near to totally independent research.
Supervise, plan, design and implement research projects
oEstablish highly complex protocol(s); define data collection, evaluation and analysis procedures
Exercise discretion and independent judgment to develop methods and procedures for operation of complex scientific equipment
Supervise set-up and operation of various scientific experiments involving complex apparatus and equipment
Contribute to research so as to merit serving as author or co-author on research publications, etc.
Assist principal investigator in writing research grants and contract proposals
Assists PI in manuscript preparation for scientific journals.
Present research findings as needed
Responsible for plan and coordination of literature and library searches and data collection programs
Develop reports of results, graphs, charts, tables, etc. of research findings
Supervise writing, reviewing and editing of various materials for publication
Provide supervisory responsibility to staff
Mentor and teach graduate students and post doctoral fellows in developing their projects and on specific techniques and protocols.
Contact as required with sponsoring agencies and/or cooperating facilities (e.g. V.A.), collaborating professionals and vendors
Open contact as needed with principal investigator, collaborating professionals, Purchasing, Human Resource Services, Space and Facilities Planning, asset management personnel, Environmental Health and Safety, Institutional Review Board staff, administrative staff relating to budget capabilities
Maintain open communication between department and others
May monitor expenditures of funds
Make recommendations to principal investigator regarding staff, supply and equipment needs for research projects
May provide budget responsibility
Provide technical guidance to students, pos-doctoral fellows and faculty as required
Train and supervise technical staff, medical and graduate students
