This position provides cancer center leadership, vision, direction, and development of all clinical programs comprised at Banner MD Anderson Cancer Centers (BMDACCs) and associated service line. Proactively promotes excellence in patient care, customer service, consultative services, and practice efficiency. Represents M.D. Anderson Cancer Center (Houston) clinical leadership at BMDACCs. Leadership responsibilities include directing, planning, and coordinating all clinical activities and programs of BMDACCs and its physicians and advanced-practice providers. Develops strategic plans and proactively promotes positive public relations. Assures clinical activities are efficient, effective, and appropriately support the research-driven, multidisciplinary, patient-centered clinical mission of the cancer center. Serves as a physician executive on the system Clinical Leadership Team (CLT) for Banner Health. Serves as a member of the BMG clinical leadership team at the system level, building and supporting effective collegial relationships with applicable internal and external constituents and stakeholders and ensuring optimal operating effectiveness and strategic positioning.
Oversees and directs the human resources cost, development and growth functions for BMDACC medical providers and contributes to the oversight of all non-provider staff. This includes reviewing and approving personnel actions including recruitment, selection or promotion of staff, evaluations, salary determinations and disciplinary actions. Leads and collaborates in the recruitment, hiring, and orientation of assigned staff. Evaluates the performance and professional competence of assigned staff as appropriate. Develops and mentors staff to promote professional excellence and growth. Fosters teamwork and creates organizational capacity for innovation, creativity and critical thinking by providing staff with authority, accountability, training, information and resources to achieve their full potential.
Serves as a key member of the team responsible for shared oversight of the overall operation of the cancer centers, which includes overseeing the development, implementation, and effectiveness of the BMDACCs clinical vision, strategy, focus, and short and long-range goals and objectives in support of the growth and success of the cancer centers program. Partners with the CEOs in achieving operational goals as outlined in the Oncology Services Agreement. Coordinates and supports the development of applicable pathways, guidelines, benchmarks and metrics in support of the cancer center. Oversees the development and ongoing promotion of educational offerings and opportunities. Assures the cancer program patient base has access to appropriate clinical trials and studies. Reviews applicable analyses and reports to evaluate program progress.
Communicates with clinical and administrative leadership, physicians and staff to ensure that clinical operations are aligned with the overall vision, strategy, and focus of the cancer program. Oversees and/or directs the development and implementation of facility-wide policies, procedures and programs aligned with stated goals and objectives. Ensures compliance with applicable Federal and State regulations and established organizational policies and procedures. Directs implementation, coordination, monitoring, evaluation and improvement of clinical outcomes, evidence-based cancer research and standards, value-oriented oncology programs, and innovative clinical methodologies and opportunities. Works collaboratively with senior management to evaluate and maximize the effectiveness of care delivery, patient safety, and related operational metrics. Works with appropriate departments to assure the successful utilization of electronic medical documents and telemedicine in support of enhanced performance. Participates as an active member of the medical executive committee at Banner Gateway Medical Center.
In collaboration with Banner Research, oversees all clinical research, including familiarity with research operations, regulatory affairs, finances, administration and clinic support. Serves as a key leader in supervising research activities such as cooperative group participation, collaboration with MD Anderson, industry-sponsored trials, and investigator-initiated trials.
In coordination with Clinical Division Heads at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center (Houston), directs all clinical activities of the cancer program and its physicians and advanced-practice providers, ensuring appropriate protocols, practices, and standards are adopted and followed. Provides collaborative leadership with senior administrators for all oncology services throughout Banner Health, including strategic planning, implementation, quality assessment, and clinical supervision.
Maintains overall accountability for the development, management and adherence of the cancer center budget. Participates in the annual update of financial statements and documents. Ensures organizational fiscal standards and expectations are met. Participates in philanthropic activities, including identification of potential donors, cultivation, solicitation, stewardship and public speaking engagements. Attends fundraising activities, as appropriate.
May serve on system Banner Health and BMG committees such as; Clinical Leadership Team (CLT), SMIL (system medical and informatics leadership) team, Clinical Consensus Groups (CCGs), Physician Leadership Councils (PLCs), Quality, Peer Review, Knowledge Management, Innovation, Privileging, Career and Professional Development. Responsible for the supervision and oversight of BMG system-wide committees within the clinical discipline. Participates in review of qualifications, credentials, performance, and professional competence and character of providers in the discipline. This also includes developing the system-wide vision, strategy, and clinical and operational performance of the cancer delivery system in collaboration with other key stakeholders across the company. This includes identifying opportunities to expand the service line and ensure appropriate provider and care coordination within the Banner Health Network (BHN).
Maintains part-time clinical practice at the cancer center.
Doctor of Medicine.
Board Certification in respective specialty/discipline. Must possess or be eligible to obtain a current State license to practice medicine and be eligible for medical staff privileges.
Training in medical, surgical, or radiation oncology and significant clinical experience in a cancer center. Significant experience in managing clinical operations in an oncology organization and with hospital organized medical staff, managed care organizations, and continuous quality improvement activities are required. Previous relevant experience working in a clinical research setting. Experience analyzing financial and statistical data and drawing appropriate conclusions based on findings. Demonstrated system-thinking skills. Extensive written and verbal communication skills, including effective presentation skills.
Skilled in the operation of computer systems and software.
Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
