Chair Department of Humanities, Health and Society
The Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine (HWCOM) is currently seeking a visionary leader for the position of Chair for the Department of Humanities, Health, and Society. This is an open rank and full-time position. Faculty rank depends on qualifications and prior accomplishments. Minimum qualifications include a terminal degree as a medical doctor (MD), board certification and/or a valid and unrestricted Florida Medical License or the ability to obtain a medical license in the State of Florida prior to employment. Candidates should have a minimum of five (5) years of administrative leadership experience in an accredited medical school, and must exemplify the highest professional and ethical standards of the medical profession. Preferred qualifications include: an outstanding record of academic, clinical, and administrative accomplishments; strong evidence of teaching, service, and scholarship; previous effective university administration or leadership roles; effective collaboration with others; and significant history of extramural funding. Successful candidates should be capable of articulating and implementing a vision for the continued growth and development of the department that supports the vision and mission of the HWCOM.
The candidate would ideally have prior involvement with AAMC, track record of participation/leadership in professional Colleges/Societies/Academies focused on certifications held by the candidate, prior academic accomplishments and extramural funding involving epidemiological population research in diverse and disadvantaged populations, or involvement as officer or Committee structure of national or international organizations focusing on goals of the type that the department of Humanities, Health and Society has advocated and initiated. Collaboration is expected with other HWCOM clinical and basic science departments, especially the HWCOM Department of Translational Medicine, and with other FIU Colleges, such as the Stempel School of Public Health, and the Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing and Health Sciences.
The priority of the Department of Humanities, Health, and Society is to support and maintain the social accountability mission of HWCOM through integrated classroom, clinical, and service-learning community experiences to educate students on social determinants of health, inter-professional teamwork, and cultural humility, while providing essential services to underserved communities. The Chair for the Department of Humanities, Health and Society will define the mission and vision of the department, develop an infrastructure that will support the department’s mission, teach and mentor medical students, residents, and faculty members, and will provide leadership and administrative oversight to the department’s academic, clinical and research activities.
