A postdoctoral position is available immediately in the Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology (MCMP) at Purdue University for a dynamic, highly motivated postdoctoral research associate in the lab of Dr. Benita Sjogren. Responsibilities: The successful candidate for this position will join, and lead, the structural biology efforts of, a project studying the molecular mechanisms of RGS protein degradation by the ubiquitin-proteasomal pathway. Specifically, we are pursuing biochemical and structural determination of RGS proteins in complex with a novel Cullin-RING E3 ligase, previously identified by the lab. Additional opportunities include exploring the approaches to target these proteins in early drug discovery efforts. The lab uses a wide range of approaches, including molecular biology, biochemical and cell based high-throughput assays and protein biochemistry. It is expected that the successful candidate will use a variety of methods, including (but not limited to), protein purification, X-Ray crystallography, Cryo-EM and cell based assays.
Environment: The lab is located in the Robert E. Heine Pharmacy Building on the West Lafayette campus. The MCMP department provides a highly collaborative environment and provides ample support for labs, including administrative support and shared equipment. The culture at Purdue University encourages collaborations across campus and the infrastructure includes state-of-the-art core facilities for Genomics, Proteomics, Structural Biology, Drug Discovery and many more. Furthermore, four University-wide Institutes (Neuroscience, Cancer, Inflammation and Infectious Disease, and Drug Discovery) enables researchers from different fields with common interests to network and build strong research programs.
The successful applicant will have a Ph.D. in pharmacology, biochemistry or related field and a record of outstanding scholarly achievement as evidenced by publications in high impact, peer-reviewed journals and presentation of research at national/international meetings. Strong communication (written and oral) skills is essential. Top candidates should have expertise in protein biochemistry and previous experience with X-Ray crystallography and/or Cryo-EM. Additional expertise in molecular biology, cellular signaling and high-throughput screening is desirable. Experience in G protein/GPCR and/or proteasomal degradation research is preferred.
