UNIVERSITY OF UTAH, SPENCER FOX ECCLES SCHOOL OF MEDICINE CHAIR, DEPARTMENT OF PATHOLOGY SALT LAKE CITY, UT
The Department of Pathology at the School of Medicine at the University of Utah seeks an exceptional academic leader to serve as its next Chair. This is a unique opportunity for a forward thinking, collaborative, and visionary leader to guide a high performing department as it continues its growth, innovation, and expanded impact across clinical service, research, education, and community engagement.
The Department of Pathology sits at the nexus of clinical care, biomedical discovery, and education—playing an indispensable role in the health system’s diagnostic, translational, and research enterprises. In close partnership with ARUP Laboratories, one of the nation’s largest and most respected academic reference laboratories, the department supports an expansive diagnostic platform that reaches far beyond Utah and fuels cutting edge science and training nationally. Department leadership is pivotal in orchestrating world class clinical services, stewarding the budget, supporting a strong research portfolio, and advancing a robust educational mission.
Reporting to the Dean of the School of Medicine, and matrixed relationship to senior leaders across the University of Utah, UHealth, ARUP Laboratories, and partners throughout the greater Mountain West region including Intermountain Health and Primary Children’s Hospital, the Chair will foster an environment that elevates clinical excellence, accelerates research innovation, and strengthens educational programs across the department’s divisions. As a key institutional leader, the Chair will help shape the future of diagnostic science, laboratory medicine, translational research, and interdisciplinary collaboration at one of the nation’s most forward looking academic medical centers.
In partnership with faculty and interdisciplinary collaborators, the Chair will articulate and execute a unified strategic vision that integrates a high performing clinical enterprise, a diverse and growing research landscape, and comprehensive pathology and medical lab science training programs (residency, fellowships, graduate and undergraduate). Priorities include strengthening laboratory and research infrastructure; expanding scientific programs in immunology, molecular diagnostics, and translational science; advancing digital and computational pathology; and deepening collaborations across the School of Medicine, Primary Children’s Hospital, ARUP Laboratories, and other campus partners.
The ideal candidate will be an inspirational, strategic, and operationally adept academic leader who models collaboration, transparency, and a strong sense of shared purpose. They will bring a distinguished record of achievement in pathology, including excellence in clinical practice, impactful scientific contributions, national visibility, a track record of extramural funding, and progressive administrative leadership within an academic medical center or integrated laboratory system. They will possess the strategic acumen, energy, and collaborative orientation necessary to lead a department with a proud history, a strong national reputation, deep community partnerships, and extraordinary potential for continued innovation.
This is a rare opportunity to guide a dynamic and high impact department at a pivotal moment—shaping the next era of discovery, diagnostic excellence, education, and scientific leadership at the University of Utah and beyond.
